SPF, Retinol, and the Hills I Will Die On: A Skincare Minimalist Guide

There are thousands of products on the market, but very few categories truly change how skin ages. In our Washington DC practice, patients often arrive with a suitcase of half used products and one simple question: “What actually matters?”

Here are the hills we will happily stand on.

Hill One: Daily Sunscreen Is Essential

If you want any chance at even tone, smoother texture, and less visible aging, daily sun protection is essential.

A good broad spectrum sunscreen:

  • Helps protect collagen from breakdown
  • Helps prevent sun spots and redness
  • Protects your investment in treatments such as BBL, Moxi, Halo, and injectables

We usually recommend:

  • SPF 30 or higher
  • A texture you will actually use every day
  • Extra protection like hats and shade during peak hours, especially after laser treatments

No product, procedure, or supplement can fully undo chronic unprotected sun exposure.

Hill Two: Retinoids Work

Retinol and prescription strength retinoids have decades of research behind them. Used consistently, they can:

  • Improve texture and fine lines
  • Support cell turnover
  • Assist with mild pigment and breakouts
  • Enhance the overall quality and glow of the skin

The trick is to start at the right strength, at the right frequency, with enough support from moisturizers and barrier products.

Hill Three: Fewer Products, Better Formulations

You do not need ten serums in the morning and ten at night. A strong minimalist routine can do more than a cluttered one.

Most people benefit from:

  • A gentle cleanser that does not strip the barrier
  • One or two targeted serums, such as vitamin C and peptides
  • Moisturizer that fits their skin type
  • Daily sunscreen
  • Retinol or retinoid at night, adjusted for tolerance

If a product does not have a clear purpose, it may be adding confusion and irritation without delivering benefit.

Hill Four: Medical Guidance Matters

When you are also doing treatments such as lasers, microneedling, neuromodulators, or fillers, products cannot be random. In our West End Washington DC office, we tailor skincare to:

  • Upcoming procedures
  • Recovery phases
  • Pigment concerns
  • Rosacea, acne, or sensitive skin

Some actives should be paused before certain treatments. Others are added afterward to support healing and results.

Hill Five: Consistency Beats Intensity

Using a gentle retinol for two years beats using a very strong one for two weeks. Wearing a good sunscreen most days of the year beats wearing a perfect sunscreen three times a month.

Healthy aging is a long game. At Ritual, we care more about what you can realistically maintain than what looks impressive in a shopping bag.
